Signs that it’s Time to Replace Your AC

When do we really need to say goodbye to our existing air conditioning system? Although investing in a new unit could be expensive, repair costs – depending on the damage – may also be costly.

Look for the following signs:

  • You have had it for almost 15 years. The life expectancy of an AC does not usually exceed 15 years.
  • Old parts. If your existing system is getting on a bit, you might find it impossible to find some of its parts for repairs. If you are lucky enough to find the right part, expect it to cost a lot.
  • Your energy bills are growing. Older air conditioners tend to consume more than 2,000 kilowatts of electricity per year, which can cause power plants to emit about 31 pounds of sulphur dioxide and 3,500 pounds of carbon dioxide.
  • Inefficient air conditioner. Low SEER or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (a metric used to measure the cooling system or each unit of energy the AC consumes) could cost a lot to repair. As a matter of fact, the new generation of air conditioners requires a rating of at least 13 and above. If your air conditioner has a SEER rating of below 13, then it consumes more energy. In this industry, the higher the SEER rating the more efficient the air conditioner will operate.
  • Frequent breakdowns. You’re starting to notice that breakdowns occur more often. Recurring repair services could pile up – and before you know it, you’ve spent a fortune!
  • It doesn’t get any colder. Having a hard time achieving the perfect room temperature? This can be a real tell-tale sign that your air conditioning is due for renewal.
  • Noise pollution. If your AC unit is making funny noises, this might also mean that the end is near.
  • Inconsistent temperature. The purpose of an air conditioner is to provide a stable temperature. If your unit is starting to change its temperature without your input, it’s definitely time to consider replacing your unit.
